Forging

Forging is a process in which the metal is shaped by applying the external compressive forces. There are mainly three types of forging, cold forging, warm forging and hot forging. As the name shows that cold forging is done at low temperature or at room temperature. Hot forging is done on high temperatures and makes the process very easy. On the other hand, warm forging requires the moderate type of temperature use to shape the metals. With growth in economy, the forging process also improves and now uses forging presses or hammer forces in order to shape the metal. Some physical properties are also used like electricity or steam that help in forging. Forgings now include different processes and machines in order to fulfill the demands. These new equipments use less time and produce more fine products.

Forging Process

This is a simple process. Traditionally a hand power hammer is used in order to shape the metal. Hammer is powered on narrow metal that shapes or designs the metal. However, with time, new technologies are provided and now there are many processes through which the forging process is done. Now different techniques are used. Electricity, heating, steam and compressed air are used to make the process of forging easier.

Different Types Of Forging

Drop forging this technique provides less impression on the metals and do not give as accuracy as the press forging. The drop forging allows the molten metal to mold in a design and therefore do not give a better result.

Induction forging is a type of forging in which the electricity or steam is used in order to heat the metals. A better forging is provided by these new ways.

Rotary forging: special machines are used which rotates the molten metal to form different round shape material. In this process, the round bar increases in length but reduces in thickness. The bar of metal is inserted in the rolls of the machines that automatically perform the function.

Types Of Metals Use For Forging

Steel Forgings: this is the hard metal thus hot forging method is used. The other reason that why the steel is used of hot forging is that it strengthen the steel more when heated. Its quality becomes better when they are highly heated. On the other hand, cold or warm forging becomes difficult for such hard metals. Alloy steel forgings are done through the hot forging. Alloys of steel become very fine and hard when heated. Their working property increases.

Stainless steel forging is performed from the process of automatic hot forging. This is a new technique in which the stainless steel bar is inserted into the machine at room temperature but they are heated inside the machine. Less labor is required and it is a very quick process.

Metal Forging: metal forging can be done through various processes. Usually the meat forging is done by hot forging methods but some week metals are also forged through warm and cold forging. All process mainly depends on the physical properties of the metal used for forging.

Forgings For Mechanical Application

Forging for mechanical devices use extra care as mechanical applications are further used for different purposes. Therefore, for them hot forging method is mainly used as it gives more advantages than cold forging. The very first advantage is that no fracture after the metal is prepared is seen after the process of hot forging. Now mechanical-presses are more in use for the preparation of different applications.
